Understanding Independent Living

living room in the cottagesThe term “independent living” seems to have different meanings depending on who you ask. Even within the senior living industry, it gets applied to a wide range of living and care situations.

So let’s take a closer look at “independent living,” what it really means, and how it applies to Buena Vida Estates.

The Definition of “Independent Living”

Independent living gives you the chance to trade the worries of homeownership (basic utilities, maintenance, and landscaping) for resort-style living. It is ideal for individuals who can still live independently but don’t want the stress of home maintenance, or worries of “what if” by having access to assistance if needed.

Also known as “active adult” communities, they offer residents a safe living environment, but with minimal assistance.

Independent Living in a CCRC

These communities typically offer apartment-style living or villa-style cottages for residents to live in just like any other independent retirement community.

Most CCRC residents still live very active lives. In fact, most CCRC contracts specify that residents must be “independent” and meet certain health requirements in order to move in. That is due to the fact that they offer a continuum of care if needed.

What if I Need More Care in the Future?

Buena Vida Estates is a “Type A” CCRC. This means they guarantee access to assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and a variety of other services if needed. “Type A” contracts also provide peace of mind in knowing that someone will never be asked to leave if they outlive their assets or have medical needs many other communities don’t provide.

Because of this, the community must fully understand the level of risk involved in underwriting this individual. That is why moving to a CCRC while you’re still independent is the best decision you can make.
