Staying Active, Healthy, and Strong Over 65
Exercise is important for everyone, but it’s especially important for older adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all older adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. This can include walking, cycling, swimming, or any other form of exercise that gets your heart rate up.
What are the benefits of exercise for older adults?
Exercise can positively impact our physical health in many ways, as well as our emotional and mental well-being. It can reduce the risk of chronic disease like heart disease and diabetes by improving blood flow throughout the body. It also helps us manage weight by increasing muscle mass and decreasing fat mass. And it reduces stress by pumping endorphins through our brains–those feel-good chemicals that boost mood!
What exercises are best for older adults?
Workouts for older adults should include a combination of aerobic activity (which helps with endurance), strength training (which builds muscle), and flexibility exercises (which keep joints healthy).
